Q. How old do I have to be to have a tattoo? Can I get a tattoo with parental permission?
A. The age of consent for tattoos is 18 with or without parental permission. This is due to the Tattoo of Minors Act 1969 which states it is an offence to tattoo anyone under the age of 18. We have no leeway in this matter and a proof of age will be required if you are lucky enough to look young!
Q. What are your opening hours/days?
A. We are open 10am to 6pm everyday apart from Wednesday and Sunday when we are closed.
We are always closed on bank holidays and public holidays.
We do not have any late-night opening times.
Q. Do you require a deposit?
A. We do, to secure your appointment. A deposit of £50 is required for all appointments unless it is a complete day booking in which case it will be £100. To pay your deposit please have your card ready when you book in for your appointment. Call 01444 454411 to pay a deposit over the phone.
Q. What is your cancellation policy?
A. We require at least 48 hours notice for a deposit refund or to move the deposit to a new date.
If you don’t show up on the day we will keep 100% of the deposit and if you book in again a new deposit will be required.

A. There is a public car park outside the studio which is free to park in. On the occasions that this is full there is also nearby on-street parking, but we ask that you park respectfully as it is a residential area.
Q. Is there wheelchair access to the studio?
A. We are a wheelchair accessible premises with disabled facilities and easy adjacent free parking.
We are also happy to adjust our working practices to suit clients as far as we can, e.g. Dimming lights or reducing noise.
Please see our Accessibility Statement for more details.
Q. Can I get tattooed whilst pregnant/ breastfeeding?
A. Sorry but not at Tattoo FX. Even though there is only a slight risk of infection if you were to get an infection it is highly likely to be passed onto your child and because of this small chance, our artists will not tattoo you if you are either pregnant or breastfeeding.
Q. When can I sunbathe or use sunbeds?
A. Ideally you should wait at least a month before sunbathing or using a sunbed and when you do go into the sun, use a good quality sun cream with a high SPF.
Q. Can I take pain relief or use numbing cream when I get a tattoo?
A. Yes. We are happy for you to use over the counter pain relief, we are also ok with you using a numbing cream.
Q. I have moles/freckles/birthmarks, can they be tattooed over?
A. Moles cannot be tattooed over, this is because it is sensible to keep an eye on any potential changes in their appearance which cannot be done if covered up.
Birthmarks we take on a case-by-case basis.
Freckles are generally ok as long as they are not raised, but again, we would look at this on a case-by-case basis.
Q. Are you a registered studio?
A. Yes, Both the studio and each individual artist has a licence to tattoo. We have been thoroughly inspected and licensed by the local Environmental Health Department.
Q. How do I prepare for a tattoo?
A. At least an hour before your appointment please make sure you have a decent sized meal. If you intend to take painkillers, also take them about an hour beforehand.
Stay hydrated and try not to drink too much alcohol the night before. We may shave the specific area that you are getting tattooed in so there is no need to do this in advance.
Q. Do you do areola tattoos or tattoo over scars?
A. We do. We have a private treatment room we use for areola work and the procedure can take about two hours initially. You may need to come back after a month to check the work is ok for colour matching or that the scars have taken the ink.
The areola work is done at a lower hourly rate but please check pricing when booking your appointment.
For scars, it helps if you come in before booking in so we can make sure they are not too keloided or too hard to tattoo. We will always be discreet and professional.
Q. Do you take cash or card?
A. We take either! Whatever is best/easiest for you.
Q. Do you do piercings?
A. I am afraid not, sorry. We don’t mind recommending places if you don’t mind travelling a little bit.
Q. Do you have vegan inks?
A. We do. All our inks are fully vegan and not tested on animals.
Q. Do you do cover-ups?
A. We do, but a greater element of trust is required when it comes to cover-ups. What you may ideally want may not be possible factoring in the existing tattoo. We will discuss options with you and give you alternative ideas if this is the case. It will depend on what is there to be covered, so it would be helpful to send us some clear well-lit photographs of the existing tattoo and what you want to cover it with. We can then advise on what is possible.
Q. What is your sterilisation/hygiene process?
A. Anything re-useable goes through a number of steps to sterilise it, from a scrub down with hospital grade cleaners, time in an ultra- sonic, and finally time in an autoclave which reaches very high temperatures for a set period of time to sterilise the item.
Surfaces are washed down between each customer using hospital grade cleaners and disinfectants.
Items like needles, and ink cups, are all one use and a new set is used for each client, they are then disposed of in clinical waste along with any disposal items like paper/plastic.
A couple of the artists use disposable grips and needle cartridges.
Tattooist’s wear appropriate PPE and follow strict hygiene routines.
Q. Do you do gift vouchers and how long are they valid for?
A. We do. We will make up vouchers for any amount (within reason!) and they are valid for 18 months. If you lose your voucher please contact the studio as we keep a record of all vouchers.
Q. Can I get tattooed if I don’t feel well?
A. Your immune system will be working hard if you are unwell and you will be asking more of it if you get tattooed. If at all possible please re-schedule your appointment. Plus we don’t want to get ill either!
If you have a bad cold, flu or Covid, please do not come in but do let us know!
Q. Do tattoos hurt?
A. This is subjective and varies from individual to individual. There are also so many variables it is impossible to definitively say whether being tattooed will hurt.
Certain areas tend to be more sensitive for example ribs and feet can be more painful than other areas.
Also, you might feel more pain at certain times or under certain conditions for example:
- If you’re unwell or have been unwell recently
- It can feel worse for women at points in their monthly cycle
- Being tired
- Being hungover/dehydrated
- Being hungry
However, the style of tattoo as well as the person doing the tattoo can also have an effect. If you are concerned please discuss with us.
Q. Can I bring a friend along for support?
A. We prefer that you didn’t, but if you have anxiety please limit this to one friend only and no more. No one needs an entourage to get tattooed.
